Switch Challenge Test Explained
- Time limit: 5 minutes
- Difficulty level: Advanced
- Type: Adaptive
The switch challenge is a 5-minute gamified assessment by AON which measures your logical deductive reasoning abilities.
You are presented with a set of shapes whose order has changed and with three possible numerical operators. You need to determine which operator could cause that change.
The test is adaptive, which means the difficulty level of the items will change according to your answer pattern.Â
Switch Challenge Test Format
The game consists of two components:
- Shape sets that appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
- Numerical operators in sets of 4 digits each. These operators switch the location of the shapes in different ways.
How to Solve a Switch Challenge Question?
Let’s solve a basic sample question below to understand the mechanics of the Switch Challenge test. Try to find which of the numerical operators could cause the change in the order of the shapes.
There are two approaches to solving this question.
- Start from the top shape set, which is how AON recommends doing it in their official sample questions file.Â
- Start from the bottom shape set, which is a more efficient method that we teach in our prep course.

Switch Challenge Difficulty Levels
As mentioned earlier, the assessment is adaptive and increases its difficulty levels according to your response patterns. At the start, you’ll have only one layer of operators, but as you progress through the test, there will be more layers.Â
More layers require more time to decipher the correct operator, which emphasizes the importance of prepration.
Preparation is KEY
The good news is that preparation can help you maximize your score potential.Â
- AON’s switch challenge is timed. You have five minutes per game! That means you have to be very quick. Simulating the same time constraints in advance puts you in a more comfortable position.Â
- The game is based on tasks that can be mastered with training.
If you practice AON’s switch challenge in advance you can score as high as possible in the limits of your innate abilities.Â

FAQs
There are about 8 difficulty levels, but since the test is adaptive, each candidate will see a different amount of levels.Â
Yes. The switch challenge test is based on known diagrammatic reasoning tests that have been used in the selection industry for decades. Two well-known providers of such tests are SHL and Saville.
While these tests are visually different, they are based on the same deductive-logical abilities seen on the Switch Challenge Test.
You can try the Saville diagrammatic reasoning test here.
We offer a prep course with an interactive prep game that simulates the Switch Challenge test. In addition, the course provides solving strategies and tips for success. It’s worth reviewing the course curriculum ⇒.Â
Your score will be determined by how far you got in the game. That is, the more difficult items you get to solve, the higher your score. There are 8 to 9 difficulty levels, thus your goal is to reach them before the 5-minute time limit ends.Â
