PXT Select Explained
The PXT Select is a pre-employment assessment that measures cognitive ability and behavioral traits, and maps occupational interests as well. It includes 182 items that measure your personality and 77 items that measure your cognitive ability. The test is not timed and takes around 60 minutes to complete. The cognitive section is what really matters in terms of preparation. More about this below…

PXT Cognitive Section
The cognitive section of the PXT assessment is known as Thinking Style. It contains 77 multiple-choice questions in math, numerical reasoning, vocabulary, and verbal reasoning. You can use a calculator during the test but no other forms of assistance.Â

Math & Numerical Abilities
The cognitive section includes 39 questions in math and numerical reasoning.
- Math/numerical ability – arithmetic calculations

- Calculators are allowed!
Vocabulary & Verbal Abilities
The cognitive section also includes 38 questions that assess verbal skills.

The behavioral section of the test will include 182 items as seen in the example image. You have to choose whether you agree or disagree with the statements.
This section is similar to other well-known personality tests and is very straightforward. The statements measure your personality through nine traits, as seen in the image below: Energy level/Pace; Assertiveness; Sociability; Conformity; Outlook; Decisiveness; Accommodation; Independence; and Judgment.
Preparation is KEY
The good news is that preparation can help you maximize your score potential:Â
- While the PXT Select is not timed, the cognitive section is adaptive and you may face some very challenging questions if you show a steady pattern of correct answers.
- Even though you can use a calculator, at least 50% of the questions will require problem solving skills in numerical and verbal reasoning. Simulating the same question styles in advance puts you in a more comfortable position.
- The cognitive section comprises 40% of the overall fit score of the PXT Select assessment! If you score low on this section, your qualification chances for the job may decrease dramatically. Â

No, it is not timed. It usually takes up to 60 minutes to complete the assessment.Â
PXT Select is the newer version of the Profile XT. It includes the same sections and measure the same abilities and traits. The differences between the two versions are:
- On PXT Select the cognitive section is adaptive, as reviewed in this guide.Â
- Profile XT is available in 30 languages, while PXT Select is only available in English, Spanish, and French. Â
It’s a shortened version of PXT Select.Â
The Thinking Style section includes the more basic cognitive questions and all the Behavioral Traits. In addition, Additionally, 50-60 questions assess how you interact with customers.Â
The test does not have an overall cut score. It combines behavioral and cognitive sections and therefore must be treated differently. Specifically for the cognitive section your goal is to score in the top percentiles of the population, which means that out of 77 questions, you want to answer 75% of them correctly. This requires training and here we can help.Â
The Interests section maps occupational interests. The employer can predict how motivated and satisfied you will be when assuming the role.Â
It is very straightforward and doesn’t require any training in advance.
