EDPT Test Explained

The EDPT is a classification test used by the US Air Force and Marine Corps for jobs in the information technology/ computer programming/ cyber and crypto fields. It is a challenging, 90-minute, online test with four subtests (each with 30 items); Arithmetic Reasoning, Figure Analogies, Number Series, and Verbal Analogies.

Section 1: Arithmetic Reasoning

This section presents various word problems that require adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing. You need to process the information in the question and select a mathematical method or formula to solve it.

Try solving the above sample question.

This is a simplified example of an arithmetic reasoning question as seen on the EDPT test.

If one paper pack costs $3.95, and the final price includes 5 paper packs, we can start by finding their price:

5 ×$3.95 = ?

We can simplify the calculation by rounding 3.95 to 4.

5 ×4 = 20

Now (0.05 ×5) = 0.025 and deduct this from 20. 20-0.025= $19.75.

The final price was $49.75. If we deduct $19.75 we have the price of 24 pencils.

49.75 – 19.75 = $30.

24 pencils cost $30. Thus, a dozen pencils will cost exactly half: $15.

Section 2: Figure Analogies

This section of the EDPT test measure abstract reasoning. You will be presented with a pair of objects that have some sort of a relationship. You will then be asked to apply that relationship on a missing pair of objects. Try  the sample question below.

Let’s review the patterns seen in the first pair:

  1. The double arrow line becomes thinner.
  2. The left arrow is removed from the line, turning into a single arrow line, pointing rightward.
  3. The triangle at the top flips vertically and moved below the line.

Now we turn to the missing pair.

  1. The first pattern (thinner lines) is present in all 5 answer options. We move on to the next pattern.
  2. We are looking for an answer in which one horizontal line was removed, just like with the arrow. This narrows down the answer options to D, E.
  3. Now we need the arrow to flip horizontally and move below/to the other side.

This leads us to choose answer option D.

Section 3: Number Series

In this section, you are presented with a sequence of numbers and you need to predict a missing number. The missing number could be positioned in the middle or at the end of the sequence.

edpt test number series sample question.

This is a simplified example of a number series question as seen on the EDPT test.

There are two  ways to  look at this series:

If we separate odd places from even places we get that:

Odd = 10, 13, 16

Even =  11, 14, 17

These two series have the same pattern which is a +3 addition.

the missing item in the series is in the 7th place, i.e. in an odd place. Therefore, we can add 16+3 = 19

Section 4: Verbal Analogies

In this section, you are presented with a pair of words with a certain relationship. You need to define that relationship and then apply it to a missing pair of words.

Here is an example of a verbal analogy as seen on the EDPT test.

This is a simplified example of a verbal analogy as seen on the EDPT test.

the relationship between Morning and Day is read from left to right, not right to left.

Morning can be described as the beginning of the day. It can also be described as a certain part of the day.

Now, looking at the word Evening, we try to match a word that would complete the relationships described above.

Evening is not the beginning or part of Sleep/Dark/Noon or Time.

The evening is the beginning of the Night.

EDPT Scoring and Passing Scores

The EDPT is scored according to the raw score, i.e. the number of correct answers. Since there are 120 items on the test, the scores can vary between 1-120.

The average score on the EDPT is 52. This means that answering 52 questions correctly will place you above 50% of the population of candidates. Answering 80 correct answers will place you in the 95th percentile of the population.

The table below presents raw scores and their respective percentile scores. The data was compiled using this source.

EDPT passing scores depend on the military position you are applying to. Here’s a table that highlights the minimum score required to qualify for three popular Airforce career paths:

Career path Pass score Percentile score
Cyber Warfare Operations (1B4X1)
60
70th
Computer Systems Programming (3D0X4)
71
89th
Scientific Applications Specialist
57
65th

Preparation is KEY

Preparing for the EDPT in advance can help you maximize your score potential.

  • The EDPT test is timed. You have 90 minutes to complete four sections and 120 questions. That means you have to work quickly and efficiently. Simulating the same time constraints in advance puts you in a more comfortable position.
  • Each section is based on principles and patterns that can be mastered with training, especially arithmetic and pattern recognition.

If you practice EDPT tests in advance, you get closer to your maximum score potential, within the limits of your innate abilities.

FAQs

Is the EDPT test difficult?

According to official resources (Alley
et al., 2007), the EDPT is considered one of the most difficult military entrance assessments! It is highly recommended to prep for this test in advance.

What is considered a good EDPT score?

While the average score is 52 correct answers, most jobs will require a minimum of 60 or more correct answers. Some jobs will require 71 correct answers, which isan 89th percentile score.

Can I use a calculator during the test?

No, you cannot use a calculator during the test. This is why it is so important to prepare in advance and to hone the skills required in this test, including mental and pen-paper calculations.

Are there breaks between the sections?

No, the test is one session with just over 120 questions, and a 90-minute time limit.

Can I go back and forth between questions?

Yes, you can. For example, you could skip a few questions in arithmetic reasoning and head over to the next section of figural analogies.
