Complete Intelligence Test Quick Facts
Â
- 30 minutes
- 68 questions
- No calculators
The VIT is a pre-employment cognitive ability test with 68 questions and a 30-minute time limit. HFM Talent Index published it and is now owned by Assessio. Let’s review the four topics the test includes:
Number Series
In these questions you are given a series of numbers and you have to find which number completes the series. The missing number could show up in the end and it could also show up in the middle. See two examples:
The pattern of the sequence is based on mathematical principles. In most cases, it would be an arithmetic principle, i.e. addition/subtraction/multiplication/division. However, an advanced question can include algebraic expressions and concepts like exponents, powers, roots, etc.
Let’s look at the first example above, 54–47–43–42. The pattern is -7, -4, -1… which means the differences increase by +3. The next difference should be -1+3=2. This would make the next item (42+2=44)Â
Mathematical Problems
These questions involve more rigorous calculations of math, including percentages, decimals, and algebraic equations. See the examples.
These questions will require more calculation steps and will involve advanced concepts. For example, you will solve algebraic expressions, add or subtract fractions, divide and multiply decimals, and so on. Since the test forbids using a calculator, it is essential to gain confidence and speed in pen & paper calculations.
Verbal Analogies
This question type presents a pair of words that have a certain relationship. You are then presented with a missing pair of words and are asked to apply the same relationship to find the word that completes the pair correctly and logically:
This question requires a rich vocabulary and the ability to define logical relationships. A difficult analogy question may include words that have more than one meaning and a pair of words whose relationship is not so straightforward. Looking at the examples above, the answers are: Check and Carpenter.
Syllogisms
These questions are a verbal form of deductive reasoning. They require concluding from premises. Below is a simplified example (The answer is Cannot say).

Scores & Percentiles
Your score is the total number of correct answers. All questions have the same weight.
There are 68 questions on the test and your goal is to answer at least half of them (34/68) correctly to be above the population’s average score.
Good, competitive scores start at 40 correct answers. For example, 41 correct answers will put you in the 7th stanine, which is approx. the 80th to 85th percentile of the population. If you answer 50 questions correctly, you’ll be in the top 10% of the population.
Preparation is KEY
The good news is that preparation can help you maximize your score potential.Â
- The VIT test is timed. On average, you have 25 seconds per question. That means you have to be very quick. Simulating the same time constraints in advance puts you in a more comfortable position.Â
- The test is based on tasks that can be mastered with training, especially when it comes to math and syllogisms.
If you practice for the HFM Talent Index VIT in advance, you are increasing the chances of scoring as high as possible within your innate abilities’ limits.Â
